# Paper topics ## Define paper topics Here you can add topics for which submissions can be made. You can distinguish between main topics and subtopics. A topic can be added via the *Add Entry* button (1). First, select the parent element/topic (2) and then give the topic a suitable name (3). Main topics have *Root* as their parent element, while for subtopics, you select the corresponding main topic as the parent element.

{% hint style="warning" %} If you don´t use any **subtopics**, the setting for *Topic option* must be set to "All topic areas selectable" in the basic settings - otherwise, the topics will appear in the submission, but cannot be selected as they are parent topics. {% endhint %}
